 The Reference Desk:

1920 Used in Eddy Current Sensing

The 1920 LCR Meter is an all-purpose precise instrument that has quite an interesting application in measuring the conductivity of sensor plates. It's back to electromagnetics class for a short discussion on eddy current properties and it's affect in transformers. Physics is cool and science rules.

Ensuring the Safety of Medical Electronics

James Richards, Marketing Engineer, takes a look at electrical safety testing of medical products from the standpoint that safety standards alone do not ensure the device is safe. That safety is as much a function of product design as it is the manufacturer's test program.

Determining if a Device is Connected Using a Low Trip Limit

Have you ever had trouble powering up an electronic device and someone comes along smartly inquiring, "Well, did you plug it in?" This happens to most of us, but when you're dealing with a DUT connected to a hipot tester and the application of high voltage, prudence comes in the form of a 'low trip limit'.

Power Factor of a Capacitor

Is there a difference between the dissipation factor and power factor of a capacitor? Yes and no. Investigate what physical and electrical properties of a capacitor influence the dissipation factor equation.

 Product Spotlight:

QuadTech's 1900 Series receives overwhelming acceptance in a number of Industries. Here are some highlighted application notes explaining the uses and applications in a few of the industries.

Low ESR Capacitor Measurements

What is ESR and how does it affect capacitor measurements? Investigate the technology and trends that have driven the manufacture of capacitors with lower equivalent series resistance. Factors affecting total loss and methods for making accurate measurements are discussed also.

Analyze This Inductor

Inductor properties, like capacitor properties, can be difficult to measure without performing analysis under real-time operating conditions. The measured inductance is dependent on the current flowing through the inductor. Knowing the precise current, being able to bias it or hold it constant will help fully characterize the inductance of the device under test.

Testing Automotive Engine Oxygen Sensors Using the 1900 Series Precision LCR Meter

The 1900 Series instrument has another interesting application in the testing of the C value in the capacitive element of an oxygen sensor used in automotive engines. Tests on the he ceramic capacitor inside the oxygen sensor are done after sensor assembly due to the fragility of the ceramic element.

Measurement of Dielectric Constant and Loss

Need to measure the dielectric constant of a solid or liquid? Integrate a QuadTech 1900 Series Precision LCR Meter and a Dielectric Product's Type LD-3 Cell for a complete measurement solution. The contact method, air gap method and two-fluid method are discussed and illustrated plus calculations are given for determining the sample's capacitance.
